Broadband Access: It’s Your Basic Human Right

broadband access

Did you know? In 2011, the United Nations (UN) declared broadband access a BASIC HUMAN RIGHT. Other basic human rights include the right to life, no one shall be subject to torture or cruel punishment, or held in slavery, and many more that sufficiently highlight how unacceptable it is that there are people in Ontario without affordable or quality broadband access.

The UN announced that broadband access is a basic human right in a report titled “Report of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, Frank La Rue.”

“The Special Rapporteur believes that the Internet is one of the most powerful instruments of the 21st century for increasing transparency in the conduct of the powerful, access to information, and for facilitating active citizen participation in building democratic societies,” says the report.

In other words, broadband access is becoming essential to thrive in the world’s quickly developing societies. Telehealth saves time, money, and lives. Telecommuters spend more time with family and are more productive. Entire businesses are created and operated online. Education methods are bolstered by strong Internet connection.

There are simply too many reasons why South Western Ontario needs better quality, more affordable broadband access! Contact your County Office today to let them know that you support SWIFT.
