One of SWIFT’s first blog posts was about YouTube EDU, an educational resource for school boards, teachers, and students. Sadly, without a decent Internet connection, an online resource like this is inaccessible. Another educational resource that the students, parents, and teachers of Southwestern Ontario deserve access to is Discovery Education Centre.
You’ve all heard of the Discovery Channel, well Discovery Education Canada is exactly what it sounds like. It’s an online resource for education materials targeted at students ranging from kindergarten to grade 12.
Discovery Education offers full lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, experiments, etc. for a wide spectrum of subjects, including science, English, social studies, and math. This resource gives teachers and parents the ability to build digital curriculums with information that some schools’ older textbooks don’t have.
As the world continues to rely more and more on technology and the Internet, from economical and social perspectives, it makes sense that education in Canada also evolves with the times. But, without affordable, high speed Internet, certain areas of Southwestern Ontario are being left behind. Once again, we have to bring up Jared Walpole, whose seven-year-old daughter is falling behind in class because of their lack of Internet connection.
If a grade 2 student needs the Internet for school work, every student needs the Internet! If you want your students to have access to the wide range of online educational resources, contact your county office today and let them know!
